Sugisawa Village (杉沢村, Sugisawa-mura) was a village in Aomori Prefecture, in the Tohoku region of Japan. Sugisawa Village appear in a legend about a man, in state of madness, killing all the other villagers with a sword (or axe) before killing himself. The location where this village was slowly incorporated into nearby village and erased from maps. As the legend goes, since the population of Sugisawa Village was wiped out, it was absorbed into Aomori City. However, it is said that evil spirits still haunts the ruins of the lost village. Anyone who visits the area will spirited away and never return.
It is said that this village has two main landmarks, an old torii gate that mark as entrance to the village and a stone that shaped like a skull. It has even been said that people who wander close to the site of Sugisawa village will hear in the distance - but very clearly - talking and laughter, as of a festival. This talking and laughter will change into screaming, and after a while this screaming halts and return back to talking and laughter.
The Tsuyama Massacre shares similar story with Sugisawa village's legend. A young man killing his 29 villager neighbour including his own grandmother with gun, sword and axe. At the dawn he comitted suicide by shooting himself in the chest. It was one of the worst massacre by single men in Japan.
This legend of the lost village became a basis storyline of Project Zero's Fatal Frame 2 : The Crimson Butterfly. In this game, a village called Minakami (en: All God's) Village was disappeared overnight after certain ritual was failed.
